EFG8. 0 Password Help - Linksys Community. Someone gave me an EFG8. I could resurrect it. I found two extra 4. GB Western. Digital drives and loaded them in. The device booted fine, network worked fine, and the web administration pages opened fine.
I used the manual online and setup wizard software to reset it to the default settings, but there were two issues: 1. I could not find the password, and had more trouble confirming what the default admin password was. The drives did not appear to be detected on the web management default page. They just said "Not Installed"First researching the default password on the forums, many people were saying that after you press the reset button on the back for 3 seconds it will reset the "admin" account back to "admin" for both the username and password. I attempted this many times and I couldn't login with that account. Some people said it was a browser issue, so I tried other browsers IE6, IE7, nothing seemed to work. I could login as the Guest account which was "guest" with no password. However this didn't do me any good as it has no rights to do anything. Others were saying to upgrade to the latest firmware and it would be fixed. I realized this can't be done if you can't log in as the admin account. I then attempted to download the reflash . Looking at the source files and that everything is mainly linux, the reflash looked a little over my head. I then decided to open the unit up. Inside I found a very basic set of components. There's an Intel Socket 7 CPU, laptop style RAM, and two IDE channels. One has a ribbon cable that plugs into the two drive bays, the other has an IDE to Compact Flash converter. Looking at this for a minute I thought why can I remove the IDE- to- CF converter and load it into a PC and try to boot it. This took a little reengineering as it has a two pin power connector, and the IDE connector cannot plug into a starndard IDE plug on a normal board without removing the plastic surrounding the pins on the board. I grabbed an old crappy board and broke the plastic part off so the IDE- to- CF would fit. Stole power from an extra floppy power connector and removed the two wires (red & black) and plugged them directly into the IDE- to- CF. Upon booting the IDE- to- CF detected fine, but it just kept printing 0.

So I grabed one of my Live Linux cds, booted from that, then mounted the three partitions on the CF card. One partition contains all of the Config settings, Usernames, and Password (encrypted). I noticed that the two main accounts were "guest" and "administrator" both with the same encrypted text for their passwords. It was then that I realized the default admin account is NOT "admin", it is "administrator". I plugged everything back into the EFG8. Loged in with "administrator" and everything is smooth sailing. Issue 2 was easily resolved after logging in. "Not Installed" is misleading, because they were installed and detected fine. They don't say Ready until you Format them from the Administration page. Several people were saying that you need to Format the disk as EXT3 in order for the device to reconize them, which is not true. The device can format them once you log in as the "administrator". I believe it does format them as EXT3, but you don't need to do that step in another computer first. Another note: Set the drives to Cable Select. The manual for download on the linksys site omitted that part from the manual. I was able to find another pdf of the manual online which contained the info for adding another/replacing a drive. It says they just need to be ATA 3.
Most people say it needs to be 8. GB or 1. 20. GB. I'm willing to bet anything smaller will also work as I have two 4. GB Wester Digitals installed, and everything is working fine. The other manual also says the drive bays need to be locked in order to operate, not sure if this is true but something simple someone may not know. Long story short: Default admin account for the EFG8. Set drives to Cable Select.
